YIC’s Birds and Bees program began around May 2009, to create awareness, educate young people about issues that they begin to face in their teenage years, in an culturally sensitive environment that promotes open discussions around healthy relationships and self-awareness.  Strategies include improving emotional wellbeing, and the building of self-esteem and strong personalities.  The program separates the gender groups into Butterfly’s and Brotherhood, where YIC partners with community health and wellbeing specialists to offer relevant, useful, and factual information. Within a year, this program is seeing good participation and holds the interest of young people, where trust can be built and important messages can then be passed on.

The Butterfly Club 2010 aims to create awareness about issues that young women face in an environment that promotes open discussion around healthy relationships; self awareness; emotional, mental and physical wellbeing; and the building of self-esteem and strong personalities. The Club is designed to aid the girls in developing life skills and life experience. We will listen to the girls, identify their talents and link them into programs enhancing their strengths as well as working closely with the girls building a strong rapport.
The Club offers an opportunity for any teen girls in the community to become involved. Club members will engage in weekly informal evening sessions, and upon joining the girls will receive a goody bag and a membership card which will offer local benefits. The current program highlights five key activities:

  1. Slumber party
  2. Hair and Beauty classes
  3. Modelling
  4. Restaurant night
  5. Camp

The Brotherhood Project
The Brotherhood Project aims to educate young men between the ages of 12-18 years about their bodies and the risks associated with not having the correct information about health and wellbeing, as well as raise their self esteem and help them develop a stronger connection to their community and heritage. This is a new program and therefore males within the community will be strongly encouraged to participate as leaders for the young participants.

The highlights of the project will be similar to the Butterfly Project with fun activities being held such as fishing, camping, boxing clinics etc. Local health professionals along with male youth workers and leaders will be in attendance to answer questions from and educate the Brotherhood Project participants.
