About Us
The Youth Involvement Council (YIC) is a not-for-profit organisation, incorporated in 1990.
YIC offers a youth drop-in centre, crisis accommodation, social enterprise, and Mingle Mob outreach and patrol. We work with at-risk young people to bring positivity to their lives. We empower them to make good choices and feel better about the future; to replace hopelessness with hope.
We support Hedland’s most vulnerable residents, providing intense case management to 100+ young people aged 5-25. In FY20 we had over 400 active clients and worked with 70+ families. Over 90% of our clients are Aboriginal; most are assessed as ‘at extreme risk’ in terms of social behaviour, self-harm, harm to others, damage and vandalism, family support and trauma.
We work with young people and their families to support them to engage with life in a positive way; that includes helping kids get to school; providing the diversion activities which teach life skills and keep kids out of trouble; helping young people who are in the justice system find their way out; providing suicide prevention and coping strategies; helping young people who have experienced assault or trauma to find a way forward – the role we play is different for each young life we deal with. All unique; all special; and all worthy of our time and care.
We are governed by a Board of Management, comprised of representatives of the community, including members who have been in the community since the YIC's inception. Our members represent Small Business, Government, Indigenous, Industry and Community.
